A 4.8 magnitude earthquake recorded in New Jersey caused tremors felt by residents in surrounding states and New York City on Friday morning.
The seismic event occurred around 10:23 a.m. Friday, approximately 5 miles north of Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, as reported by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). Despite being about 45 miles from New York City, residents experienced shaking of furniture and floors.
There have been no significant disruptions or damages reported in either New Jersey or New York.
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy announced the activation of the State Emergency Operations Center and urged people not to call 911 unless it was a genuine emergency. Governor Kathy Hochul of New York stated that the earthquake was felt across the state, with officials currently evaluating any impacts or potential damages. Mayor Mike Spano of Yonkers, New York, mentioned that City Hall experienced shaking, but there were no reports of injuries.
Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie described feeling the tremors in his home in Mendham, New Jersey, lasting approximately 25 seconds.
Residents and officials reported feeling the earthquake throughout New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and beyond. The quake’s effects extended as far as Cambridge, Massachusetts, about 250 miles away from the epicenter. Charita Walcott, a resident in the Bronx borough of New York, likened the experience to a “violent rumble” lasting around 30 seconds.
